There is enough picture information in a VHS signal to support capturing at the resolutions I suggested. PAL VHS has 576 lines of useful picture information and NTSC VHS has 480 lines of useful picture information. While the equivalent digital resolution for PAL VHS is 335×576 and 333×480 for NTSC VHS, luckily it is possible to sample at any number in the horizontal dimension when digitizing analog video. (It is fortunate because compliance with common digital video standards requires using numbers for the horizontal dimension that don't match the equivalent digital resolution for VHS.) 720x576 and 768x576 are the full-sized standard definition resolutions typically used for capturing PAL VHS tapes in 4:3 aspect ratio. I found the S-Video port from this device was much better than the conexant port. I had no problems in capturing the video through the s-video port and the sound from the conexant audio & video port from my video cam. The video captured was good but not great and with no audio synchronisation problems. The end result from this product is fit for purpose but could be better if there was improvement on driver software.

I did try and contact the ArcSoft software provider but it seems that this software is not supported any more and it has been discontinued - much like Microsoft DVD maker. Yes I know making DVDs is considered 'old school' now but there are still a lot of us out here that still like to make disks and keep our movies that way. Briefly, it works and is easy to use but the software is limited in its capabilities. You can also rip video from a PVR but the aspect ratio cannot be altered so it may end up tall and thin. 5 stars works great. Software is a bit crap but it works well most people just want to burn dvd from video camera or vhs player adding titles and menus ect is a waste of time, I did not bother you have to tick the box ' do not add menus' when you get to the burning stage, super vhs is a better signal transfer than RCA plugs if you have it on your vhs player or video camera.

I have done a capture test using. Tried the uncompressed file option (default setting), but was quite surprised after about 20 minutes of recording that the file size was huge, much more than I had expected, and I am aware that avi files take alot of file space. Luckily there were other options which allowed the file size to be much lower. The problem I had at the end of the recording was that the audio was out of sync - quite considerably and noticeably. Anyone know what could be causing this?
